I was working late at my bench in Portland last fall, trying to get a Rolleiflex 3.5E back together. My tweezers slipped and the whole shutter blade stack scattered across the floor. I was about to pack it in when an older guy named Frank called me from the shop next door. He heard me swear through the wall and came over with a magnifier and a few tricks for stacking those blades. Showed me how to use a piece of tape as a hinge guide, saved me from ordering new parts. Has anyone else had a random stranger bail them out of a jam like that?

I was at The Grove last weekend grabbing coffee, and I saw a guy in a wheelchair trying to get up one of the curb ramps near the fountains. That ramp had a lip at the bottom about 2 inches high, so his front wheels just banged into it. He had to back up and take a running start just to get over it. I used to do ADA compliance checks for my old job 10 years ago, and stuff like this was supposed to be fixed back then. Has anyone else noticed how many older shopping centers in California still have ramps that don't meet code?

I planned this trip for months, checked the weather, packed a new chair and my 8 inch Dob. Got there around 9 PM and the sky was washed out. I thought it was a dark sky park but the moon was barely up. Turns out a wildfire 60 miles away was pumping smoke into the whole region. Couldn't even spot the Milky Way. Rangers said it's been happening more often the last few years. Anyone else run into this with smoke ruining a trip?

Poor girls were stuck in the coop all day with no water in the July heat. Ended up having to tear the whole thing out and go back to my old manual door. Has anyone else had luck with any automatic doors that actually last more than a month?

I was new on a big lathe job, making a 6 inch bore in a steel housing. The old foreman, guy named Ray, swore by high speed for a clean finish. He said 'just crank it to 800, it'll sing.' I did, and halfway through the final pass, the insert chattered so bad it looked like a washboard. The part was scrap, a $500 piece of material gone. I learned later that for that specific bar length and material, 350 rpm was the sweet spot. Ray was great on mills but his lathe knowledge was stuck in the 90s. It taught me to always double check speeds with the tooling rep's charts, even if a veteran says otherwise. Anyone else have a 'trusted' tip that blew up in their face?
