I used dried beans instead of canned for a month and my grocery bill dropped by $34
I got tired of paying 99 cents a can so I bought a 4 pound bag of pinto beans for $4.79 at the Save A Lot here in Dayton and cooked them in batches on Sundays. The soaked overnight ones came out way softer and cheaper than the quick boil method I tried first, which left half of them crunchy. I'm saving about $34 a month now between beans and rice, and my kids don't even notice the swap in chili. What's the best cheap thing you've switched to that actually stuck?
How long do you soak them overnight, and do you add salt to the water or wait till cooking? Made the switch last year but mine still come out a little firm in the middle sometimes. Also curious if you freeze the cooked batches or just keep them in the fridge for the week.
