I stopped by the big chain store on Wayne Ave on Tuesday to grab rice and beans for the month and just about lost it at the price tag. Same 5 lb bag of long grain white rice, $8.99 on the shelf. I walked two blocks to the little market on the corner and got the exact same size for $4.50, plus dried pintos for $1.29 a pound instead of the $2.49 the chain wanted. The onions were a buck a pound cheaper too. I get that rent is different, but this is the same product in a bag, not some fancy brand. I've been shopping at the chain out of habit for years and now I feel dumb about it. I'm trying to feed my family on about $80 a week so a $4.50 difference on one item actually matters. Where do you all go for bulk staples, and is there a pattern to which stores gouge on the basics?
