I swore I would never buy a place with a cistern, then the inspector found this one in Leadville
Two weeks ago I walked away from a $38,000 Victorian in Leadville because the whole water setup ran off a 1,200 gallon cistern and I thought that was a nightmare waiting to happen. Then my realtor dragged me into a different place on the same block and the basement flooded after a hard rain, right onto a cracked clay sewer line that quoted out at $9,400 to replace. The cistern place had a new pump and a full tank from last fall, and the owner keeps a log of his hauling trips. All of a sudden hauling water twice a season sounds a lot better than digging up a yard. Does anyone here run a cistern through a real winter, and what do you do about the lines freezing?
