I used to do a full clean from the bottom up, but after a job in Boulder last fall I switched to top-down for most brick chimneys. Anyone else change their main method?

Yeah, the "base layer has to be solid" thing is my whole life. I ignore the big update until my computer is basically a fancy paperweight.

Noticed the same thing with software updates. Sometimes you have to fix the high level stuff before the details will work right.

My old laptop had this weird bug where the mouse would freeze for two seconds every minute. I spent weeks trying every mouse driver fix I could find. The real fix was a full system update I had been putting off. Once that big update installed, the tiny mouse problem just vanished. It really showed me how the base layer has to be solid before the small parts can work.
