My string of pearls was dying until I tried the bottom watering trick

I've had this string of pearls for about 8 months now and it was looking really sad, with lots of shriveled leaves and some rot near the base. I tried watering from the top like I do with my other succulents but it just kept getting worse. Last month I started putting the pot in a shallow dish of water for 20 minutes instead... and let me tell you, the difference is night and day. Now I only water when the soil feels bone dry, and I've got new growth popping out all over. Has anyone else had better luck with bottom watering for these picky plants?

Heard a museum volunteer say something that stuck with me last Saturday

I was at the local history museum in Salem, poking around their new exhibit on colonial pottery. One of the volunteers, an older guy named Bill, mentioned that most of the sherds they dig up are from basic kitchen stuff, not fancy tableware. He said "People forget that 90% of what survives is just everyday trash, not treasure." That line made me realize I've been focusing too much on the flashy artifacts in my own reading. Now I'm spending more time looking at old cooking pots and plain tools instead of just the gold jewelry. Has anyone else shifted their focus to the boring stuff after hearing a similar comment?

Found out the hard way that Samsung fridges lie about error codes

Had a Samsung fridge at a rental property in Denver last week that kept giving me a 22E error code for the ice maker. Spent 3 hours testing the auger motor and wiring harness based on what the manual said. Turns out the actual issue was a tiny crack in the main control board that only showed up when the compressor kicked on. I swapped the board for $85 from a parts supplier and it fixed everything. Anyone else run into phantom errors on these newer Samsung models where the code points you totally wrong?

Met an older keeper at the feed store who changed how I feed my flock

Last month at Tractor Supply in Springfield, a woman in her 70s saw me buying layer pellets and told me to switch to fermented feed. She said her hens have laid bigger eggs and had way fewer health issues since she started doing it 3 years ago. Has anyone else tried fermenting their feed and seen a real difference?

Am I the only butcher who spent years trimming fat the hard way?

For about 5 years at the shop in Austin, I was cutting every steak with the fat cap still thick because I thought that's what customers wanted. Then a retired butcher from Chicago came in last month and pointed out my ribeyes had too much hard fat left on, said it chews like rubber. Anybody else have that moment where a simple tip from an old timer changed how you trim for the rest of your career?

Warning: picked a $35 hostel over a $50 one in Lisbon and it nearly ruined my trip

I was in Lisbon last month and had to choose between a hostel in Alfama for $35 a night and one near the train station for $50. I went cheap because I wanted to save for food and tours. Big mistake. The cheap hostel had no AC and the August heat was brutal, plus the shared bathroom had a broken lock that just swung open. I ended up spending $15 a night on a fan from a shop and lost sleep worrying about my stuff. The $50 one had AC, lockers in the room, and breakfast included which would have saved me $10 a day anyway. Has anyone else found that paying a little more up front actually saved them money in the end?

Appreciation post: That old timer who told me to sharpen my chisels less often

I overheard a guy at a cabinet shop in Portland last month telling his apprentice to stop sharpening chisels after every single cut. Said it wears them down way faster and you just need to strop more. I tried it on my last job building a set of oak shelves. I only sharpened twice during the whole project instead of maybe ten times and the finish cuts looked just as clean. My chisels are already holding an edge better after three weeks. Anyone else find they oversharpen and should back off a bit?

PSA: My winch was installed upside down for 2 years

I pulled into a mud pit last Saturday and watched my winch line come off the drum all wrong. A buddy with a lifted Jeep walked over and just stared at it for a second before saying 'you know your fairlead is on the bottom, right?' I had bolted the whole thing on without thinking back when I built my front bumper. Two years of thinking it was just a cheap winch and it was user error the whole time. Anyone else ever get a basic install direction wrong and just live with it?

Just measured my desk cable drop and was shocked

I finally got around to measuring the actual length of cables hanging down from my desk setup last night. Turns out I have about 18 feet of loose cable just dangling under there between my monitor, laptop, and phone charger. That's more than a full extension cord's worth of wire making a mess! I found this out when I was trying to figure out why my desk always looked so cluttered even when I cleaned it. Anyone else ever actually measure their extra cable length and get surprised by how much there is?

Showerthought: Should we really trust those cheap hydraulic oil filters from online?

I bought a 10 pack of hydraulic oil filters for our MRL lifts off some site last month for like 60 bucks. Seemed like a good deal since the local supplier wanted 18 each. First three months they worked fine, but then one blew a seal on a job in a 12 story building downtown. Had to call a buddy to bring a spare while I sat waiting 45 minutes losing billable time. The customer saw the delay and chewed me out over their lunch break schedule. Now I'm wondering if it's worth saving 120 bucks upfront just to risk that kind of headache. Anyone else had cheap parts crap out on you in a pinch?
