I changed my mind about cleaning coolant tanks every month

For years I cleaned the coolant tank on our Haas VF2 every four weeks like clockwork, thinking it kept the machine happy. Then a guy from our tool supplier in Dayton said he checks the pH and concentration first, and only cleans if needed. I tried his method last quarter and the tank was still fine after twelve weeks, saving me a full day of downtime. Has anyone else moved away from a strict schedule for this kind of maintenance?

So we were basically just giving that tank a bath on a schedule like it was a toddler. All that work for a coolant that was probably just fine and having a nice day. My shop foreman would have a fit if he knew how much time we wasted being so extra.

Totally! I switched to checking our sump by smell and sight, and it's cut our cleanings in half.

But what about the buildup you can't see or smell?
