Old timer at my last shop showed me a thread chasing trick

Had a guy named Frank who ran a Bridgeport for 30 years before I even touched a machine. I was chasing a 3/4-16 thread on a stainless part and kept getting a rough finish, and he just walked over and said your tool is too sharp, blunt it with a stone first. I did it and the next pass came out smooth as glass, he retired like 2 weeks later and I still think about that advice. Anyone else get some wisdom from an old timer right as they were leaving?
