Ran my 3/4 end mill at 0.012" chipload instead of 0.006" and the finish got better
A guy named Pete who runs a Haas VF-2 down in Bakersfield kept telling me to quit babying my feed rates. I ignored him for a while because it felt wrong to push a 3/4 end mill that hard in 1018 steel. Last week I had a big batch of brackets, so I bumped the chipload from 0.006 to 0.012 per tooth and watched. Cut time dropped from 9 minutes per part to about 5 and a half, chip color looked right, and the wall finish came out smooth enough that I skipped the finish pass. My old habit was slowing everything down, which just made the tool rub and work harden the steel. Anyone else find that going faster fixed a finish problem that slower speeds created?
