Ran my first setup without a single scrapped part thanks to a guy at the Dayton shop
A retired machinist named Walt came through our shop in Dayton last Tuesday and watched me dial in a vise for a 4140 block, then he showed me how he taps the part down with a dead blow before the final torque. He ran the same Bridgeport for 31 years and swears the indicator reads truer if you snug one bolt at a time instead of cranking all four down at once. Anybody else pick up a trick like that from an old timer that you still use on every setup?
My buddy picked up a trick from an old timer at his shop where you tap the part with a soft mallet while the bolts are only finger tight, then torque them down in a cross pattern. He swears his numbers got way more repeatable after that. Some of these old guys just have it in their hands after decades on the same machine.
