TIL a guy running a Haas VF-2 in Warren was losing parts to chatter and his fix was just tightening the leveling pads
He showed me a picture and his machine had been walking a little on the floor for months. He thought it was a spindle issue and almost paid for a rebuild quote. Turned out two of the six pads were loose maybe a quarter turn each. Once he snugged them down the chatter went away on the same program with the same speeds and feeds. I checked mine that night and found one pad on the back corner was basically finger tight. Made me wonder how many people chase tooling and feeds when the machine is just rocking on the slab. Anybody else find their feet getting loose over time, or is it just old floors like the one in our building?
That "finger tight" part hits home. I found a back pad on my mill that I could turn by hand and it had probably been like that since we moved it in. Cheap fix, tight check. Takes two minutes with a wrench and saves a spindle quote.
