A roaster in Portland asked me what my coffee tastes like to me, and I couldn't answer
I was in Portland last Saturday at a small roastery on Division Street, just killing time before meeting my brother for lunch. The guy behind the counter poured me a sample of a washed Ethiopian and asked a simple question: what does it taste like to you? I stood there like an idiot for ten seconds and said 'good.' He laughed and said most folks say that, then he told me to stop reading tasting notes and just say the first thing that pops in my head. I said lemon and honey, and he nodded and said that was the whole point, that my tongue already knew and I was just second guessing it. It hit me later that I have been drinking coffee the same way for a while now, buying whatever bag has the fanciest words on it and never once asking myself what I actually taste. So now I sit with a mug for a minute before I add anything and just try to notice what is there. Do you all actually taste the stuff on the label, or do you just go with what sounds nice like I did?
