Vent: picked paper filters over my metal cone for a week and I regret it

I ran out of paper filters on a Saturday morning and had to choose between driving 20 minutes to the shop on Main or just using my metal cone for the week. The metal cone let so much sludge through that my cup tasted muddy by day 3, and I went back to paper on Thursday. Did I grind too fine for the metal, or is that just how it goes with those?
