My city council race came down to 42 votes, and I still don't know if I should have knocked on doors instead of posting online
So last November I ran for city council in a town of about 9,000 people, and I lost by 42 votes out of roughly 3,100 cast. I put in maybe 60 hours total, mostly writing posts on the local Facebook group and replying to comments, because door knocking felt awkward to me. My opponent knocked on over 800 doors in the same 8 week stretch, and I keep going back and forth on whether that is what beat me or if my platform just did not land with the older crowd. What gets me is that I had three people tell me they agreed with me on the zoning stuff but had no idea who I was until they got to the ballot. I am not mad, just stuck on this, because the same debate is playing out in bigger races right now. Does anyone here think online stuff actually moves votes, or is it all just noise until you show up at someone's porch?
