Been using the same old lift bag inflation trick for years, and it finally bit me.

On a job in the Gulf last Tuesday, I was trying to move a heavy section of pipe and my usual quick blast of air from my bailout bottle just wasn't cutting it. The bag kept rolling and the load was unstable, and my dive partner radioed up, 'You know you're supposed to fill it from the bottom valve, right?' How many other little bad habits have I picked up over time? What's one basic thing you realized you were doing wrong way too late?

Crazy good luck" is just unlearned lessons stacking up.

Wait, you were filling it from the TOP valve? That is honestly terrifying. You must have had some crazy good luck for years. That's a basic lesson they drill into you in school.

Man, that's a scary wake-up call. So were you just using the overpressure valve the whole time to fill it? I mean, that would explain the rolling for sure, it just fills a pocket at the top. It's wild how you can get away with a shortcut for years until it really matters. Makes you stop and think.
