Overheard a deckhand in Galveston say 'mud is just water that got tired'

Tbh, I was grabbing a coffee before a hull cleaning job and this old salt was talking to a new guy. He said that line about the mud while explaining why you never rush a silt survey. Honestly, it made me stop and think about how often I fight the environment instead of just working with its pace. Has anyone else had a simple phrase shift how you handle a specific diving task?

Ever heard "the river decides the swimmer"?

Absolutely, those little sayings stick with you. A salvage diver I worked with always told us "rust never sleeps, but it does take naps," which changed how I plan for long term metal exposure. You just learn to stop fighting the timeline of the thing you are working on. It forces you to respect the process instead of just bulldozing through.

So we're just taking random work quotes as deep life advice now? It's a clever line about rust, but it's not some big truth. Most of the time you just pick a coating and hope it lasts. Respecting the process sounds nice until you have a deadline and a budget.
