Thought a hose clamp was a hose clamp until a fitting blew at 90 feet in Port Fourchon
Last month I was on a job off Port Fourchon and we had a supply line let go on a dive because someone grabbed the wrong clamp off the truck. The whole time I'd been treating clamps as a simple part, grab whatever fits and tighten it down. But on the surface-supplied gear it matters which one you use, the worm gear style can chew into the hose jacket and rust out, while the full band type holds way more evenly. I watched a young diver pull a clamp snug with a screwdriver and call it good, and 20 minutes later the fitting let loose at depth. It didn't hurt anybody but it killed the dive and the sup was not happy. We now check the band type and torque by hand before any hose goes in the water, and it has saved us at least two near misses since. What clamp setups are you all running on your umbilicals and how often do you swap them out?
