Took me 8 years to realize I was torquing my band clamps wrong on a pipeline job off Louisiana

A old timer watched me crank one down and said 'son, you're squeezing the life out of that gasket' and handed me a torque wrench set to half what I was doing. Has anyone else had a senior diver pull them aside and show them a basic trick that saved them hours of rework?

Well actually torque wrenches weren't really common on rigs back then, most guys just went by feel. You gotta remember those old timers learned from guys who learned from steam fitters in the 40s, they had a different way of doing things.

most guys just went by feel" - yeah that's fair but even with feel you can still overtighten. The old timer I saw do it ran it down snug then backed it off a hair before the final turn. Way different than cranking until it stops moving.
