Hot take: food banks don't want your expired cans, and I was wrong to think they did
I used to clean out my pantry every spring and dump everything past the date into the donation bin at the church on Oak Street, figuring someone could use it. Then a volunteer there told me they spend about 15 hours a month sorting and throwing out expired stuff, and it actually costs them money in dumpster fees. Now I check dates first and only bring things with at least 3 months left, plus I ask what they actually need instead of guessing. Turns out canned protein and baby formula are always short, while everyone brings dented boxes of pasta. What do your local food banks say they actually need most?
