Just realized you can fix a whole block party with a clipboard and a sign-up sheet
Our block has tried to get a summer get-together going for three years. Every time it dies because one person ends up doing everything and burns out. I was that person two summers ago, running around knocking on doors in the heat, and I gave up after about 6 days.
What changed my mind was a lady two streets over, Carol, who runs their block's food drive. She showed me her system: one clipboard, taped to her porch rail, with a paper sheet split into slots. People sign up for what they can do, and nobody has to call anybody. She said the trick is you ask for tiny stuff, like "bring 2 chairs" or "cut the watermelon," not "help with the party."
We put a sheet out on April 12 and had 14 names in 3 days. No group texts, no door knocking. I was against paper at first because I figured a shared online doc would be faster. It wasn't, and older neighbors just plain ignored it.
So the sign-up sheet won me over. The clipboard is stuck to a nail by my mailbox and it's been working all month. Anyone else run their community stuff on paper like this, or am I just slow to catch up?
