Picked a $250 repair over a $17 part on my 2012 Civic, and I'm still not sure I chose right
Back when I first got my 2012 Civic I noticed a small leak under the water pump and had to choose between a $17 gasket kit or paying a shop about $250 for a full pump swap. I went cheap and did the gasket myself in my dad's driveway in Mesa, watching a YouTube video on my phone the whole time. It held fine for about 8 months, then started dripping again right before a road trip to Flagstaff. Looking back, my neighbor Ray told me to just do the whole pump while I was in there, and he was probably right. I ended up paying double later, once for the gasket and again for the pump plus a tow. These days I try to think about what else could fail while I'm already in there, but I still mess it up sometimes. What's your rule for fixing the small thing versus replacing the whole part?
