Spent 3 years running our block cleanups solo because I never asked for help, then a neighbor asked one question that hit hard
I have been the one hauling trash bags to the curb after every cleanup on our street for about 3 years now, usually 15 to 20 bags by myself while everyone waves from their porches. Last Saturday a guy named Marcus walked over while I was dragging the 12th bag and asked why I never put the sign up sheet at the corner store so people could pick a job. I just stared at him because honestly it never crossed my mind, I figured nobody would sign up so why bother asking. He grabbed a marker and paper from his car right there and we had 9 people signed up for the next one in 20 minutes. Turns out I was treating the whole thing like my personal chore instead of an actual community thing, which is kind of the opposite of the point. Anyone else ever realize they were accidentally running a group project all by themselves?

Learned that same lesson when I started a tool share on my block and kept it all in my garage instead of a shared shed. Putting up a simple sign up list at the corner store changed everything because people actually want to help, they just need a clear way in and a job to pick. Try the sheet thing, it turns one person's chore into everyone's thing pretty fast.
