Update: I volunteered to run the meal train for a neighbor and learned nobody actually wants 12 lasagnas
Six weeks ago my neighbor Dana had knee surgery, so I signed up to organize the meal train for our block. I made a shared calendar, got 14 people to commit, and thought I was crushing it. But by day four I noticed something weird: three straight lasagnas showed up and Dana's fridge was packed with them while her trash can was full of takeout containers. I called her to ask what was going on, and she admitted she was ordering pizza at night because she didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings about the food. So I scrapped the calendar and switched to a simple shared note where people could claim a specific thing like "Tuesday, kid friendly, no cheese" or "Friday, just paper plates and a bag of ice." The next two weeks went totally different. People brought groceries, walked her dog, and one guy just dropped off a $25 gift card to the corner store on Grand Ave. What I learned is that a meal train isn't really about meals, it's about giving people clear small jobs so they can actually help. Has anyone else run one of these and found a better way to organize it than a signup sheet?
