That $68 noise canceling headband I bought for the 6am train was a gamble

I ride the 7:14 from Brookline into Boston every weekday and the guy behind me talks on speakerphone the whole way. After two weeks of grinding my teeth, I grabbed one of those headband style noise cancelers for $68 on a whim, not expecting much. First morning I put it on and the train roar just dropped out, but I still heard the station announcements clearly enough. Now I'm wondering if I should've spent more for over-ear ones, or if anyone else has found a cheaper fix for loud commuters on their route.
