Tried burned finish on a 20x30 patio in Fresno and I'm not going back to smooth
Last month a customer in Fresno wanted a patio that matched her old farmhouse, so I gave her two choices: a smooth hard trowel finish like I've done for 15 years, or a burned finish with a hard steel trowel and a touch of black dye. She picked the burned one, and honestly I was nervous because I'd only run that finish twice before. We poured 20x30, about 7 yards, and I burned it in with a 36 inch steel trowel after the bleed water dried up. Took me two extra hours and my shoulders were toast, but the mottled gray and black look came out better than anything smooth I've ever done. Customer teared up when she saw it, said it looked like her grandma's old porch. I charged her $400 extra for the dye and time, and she tipped my crew $100 in cash. Now I'm wondering if I've been playing it safe with smooth finishes this whole time. Any of you run burned finishes regular? What's your go to mix ratio for the dye?
