Watching the gas station by my place change its prices 3 times in one day made me rethink the "it's just supply and demand" thing
I fill up at the Shell on Lorain Ave every Monday morning before work, and last week I noticed something weird. At 7am the sign said $3.19. When I drove past at lunch it was $3.39. On my way home around 6 it was back down to $3.24. Nobody delivered new gas to that station between those times, I can see the delivery trucks from my window and there were none. So I started writing the prices down every time I passed for 9 days, and the pattern is all over the place. The price jumps up right before the weekend when everyone's driving, then drops back down Monday. It has almost nothing to do with what the station actually paid for the fuel. I called the manager and asked him straight up why the price moved 3 times in 8 hours and he just said "corporate sets it, I don't ask questions." Now I'm wondering how many other prices I see every day are just somebody testing what we'll pay. Does anyone else track stuff like this or am I just being paranoid?
