A girl in my writing group said she writes 3 prompts before every session, and now I get why my stuff feels flat
So last Tuesday at the library in Nashua, this girl in my writing group mentioned she jots down three prompts before she even sits down to write her actual story. I always thought prompts were just for when you're stuck, like a warmup you skip once you know what you're doing. But she said she uses them to find the scene she actually wants to write, not to practice writing. That hit me because I've been staring at the same opening paragraph for two weeks, rewriting the same six sentences over and over. I tried her thing on Thursday, just three quick prompts about a fishing trip, and the third one gave me a whole different ending. It wasn't even about fishing anymore by the time I was done. Now I'm wondering if I've been using prompts backwards this whole time. Does anyone else write prompts even when they already know what story they want to tell?
