Heard a guy at Best Buy tell a grandma her router was hacked, and it made me rethink how I talk to my own parents
I was standing in line at the Best Buy on Howe Ave last Saturday and overheard a salesman telling this older woman that her router had been "hacked" and she needed a $200 a year protection plan to fix it. She looked terrified and pulled out her card right there, and I stepped in and told her to go home and just change her WiFi password and update the router firmware for free. He gave me a nasty look but she put her card away and left. What got me was how easy it was to scare her, because she did not know what a router even does or how to check it. I sat with my own mom that night and realized she still uses the same password on her email, bank, and Facebook, which is exactly how people get cleaned out. So now I am curious, how do you all explain basic stuff like password managers and 2FA to parents or older family without making them feel dumb?
