The coffee shop wifi that almost stole my password
So I stopped at this little cafe in Portland last Tuesday to get some work done and their free wifi had a popup that looked like a standard login page. Except it asked for my email password to verify my identity, which I almost typed in before realizing the domain was something like coffeefree-wifi dot net. I called over the barista and she said like three other customers had mentioned the same thing that morning, so the owner checked the router and someone had swapped the DNS settings. Has anyone else run into fake captive portals at small businesses? How do you spot them before you hand over your credentials?
