Carrying a pen daily, is it really worth it or just extra pocket clutter?

I went 3 weeks without my trusty pen and had to borrow one at a bank in Dallas, which felt weird for a grown adult. Now I am torn, part of me says a pen is basic gear like a wallet, but the other part thinks my phone notes app does the job fine. Do you actually use your pen every day, or is it just there in case?
