A guy at the Dayton mall meetup told me to stop shooting wide, and my photos got way better
Last Saturday I drove out to the old Salem Consumer Square near Dayton to shoot the dead Sears wing with my phone on 0.5x zoom. A guy named Rick who has been shooting abandoned malls for years watched me for a minute and said "you're making the place look small, back up and use the regular lens." I tried it and the hallway suddenly stretched out like it goes on forever, which is exactly the feeling you want from an empty mall. Since then I only shoot at 1x and step way back to catch the ceiling tiles and dead escalator in one frame. Has anyone else had someone call out their zoom habits like that, or am I the only one who was doing it wrong?
