Spent 2 years photographing dead malls and just figured out why all my wide shots looked flat and boring
I shoot dead malls almost every weekend, sometimes 3 or 4 a trip, and I've probably put 2,000 photos of empty food courts and dark anchor stores up on my Flickr. For the longest time something felt off and I couldn't place it. Then a guy in a comment on one of my Rolling Acres shots asked why I always stood right in the middle of the hallway at eye level. I went back through everything and yeah, every single wide shot was taken from dead center, chest height, straight down the corridor. Same angle over and over. The reason is dumb. I got used to shooting that way because it's where the tripod felt level and I never moved. So the ceilings and the tile lines all looked the same and the pics had no pull to them. So now I'm trying corners and low angles and shooting from inside an old storefront looking out. Has anyone else had a rut like that with their mall shots, maybe a height or an angle you kept falling into without noticing?
