Rant: I was dead set against a sump pump in my Congress Park basement until my neighbor showed me his setup
For two winters I mopped up water in my basement every time the snow melted, and I kept saying a sump pump was overkill for a 1920s house in Congress Park. Then last month my neighbor Dave let me look at his pit after a big thaw, and he pulled 14 gallons out of a corner that stayed bone dry. What got me was how simple it was, just a $180 pump, a liner, and a check valve on a hose running to the alley. I always pictured jackhammering the whole floor, but he only cut a 24 inch square and patched it back with concrete mix. After hearing that, I called a guy who quoted me $1,400 for the whole job and I booked it for the first week of April. Has anyone here run the discharge line into a dry well instead of the alley, and did the city give you any grief about it?
