Had a client at a Dearborn coffee shop last week point out I was rambling instead of listening

A guy named Tom from a commercial roofing outfit asked me one simple question about my flooring work and I talked for 4 minutes straight before he cut me off and said I never actually answered him, and that's when I realized I've been treating every networking chat like a sales pitch instead of a real conversation.

Did you catch that piece on NPR a few weeks back about how people interrupt each other in conversation? It got into how we're all so worried about sounding smart or useful that we forget to just shut up and listen. Your roofer calling you out was actually a gift, most people just nod and ghost you. I started timing myself after I read a study saying the average person listens for only 17 seconds before jumping in to talk.

That 17 second stat hits hard, did you start using a timer with clients?
