Noticed people at networking events keep pitching before they listen

I went to about 5 different Detroit business mixers last month, and I swear half the conversations I overheard were people jumping into their elevator pitch before the other person even finished saying their name. There was this one guy at the Eastern Market event who literally interrupted someone mid-sentence to hand them a business card. I get that you want to make an impression, but if you don't know what the other person actually does or needs, how is that card gonna help? As a personal trainer I see the same thing when new clients come in - they want to tell me their whole fitness plan before I even ask about their injuries or goals. Has anyone else noticed this getting worse lately or is it just the events I'm picking?

Wait, he actually handed them a card in the middle of their sentence? That's wild. I'd probably just stare at it until they walked away.

Right? Staring at it until they walk away is honestly a solid move. I had some dude at a bar once try to hand me his business card mid story about my dog passing away. Just held eye contact with him and let it sit there in his hand until he got uncomfortable. Some people don't get that not every moment needs a sales pitch.
