Question about torquing head bolts in two passes vs three after what happened to my 6.7 in the shop last month
Last month a customer brought in a 2016 Ram 6.7 with a blown head gasket and my lead guy swore by the two pass method, 90 ft lbs then a full 180, while I was taught three passes and it's always held for me. The truck came back three weeks later with coolant in the oil and now the whole shop is arguing about who was wrong. Any of you run two passes on these or am I right that three is the only way to go?
So the truck came back three weeks later with coolant in the oil and everyone's ready to burn somebody at the stake over two passes vs three? Come on now. Head gaskets fail for a hundred reasons, a warped deck, a bad surface prep, bolts that stretched, a guy who didn't chase the threads or clean the holes out. You could do three passes perfect and still lose that gasket if the block wasn't flat. Fights like this get started because it's easier to blame the torque pattern than to pull the head again and actually measure stuff. Besides, three weeks is plenty of time for something else to go wrong, a bad thermostat, a clogged EGR cooler, whatever. Maybe stop arguing and start checking.
