Vent: The old hand at the shop in Tulsa told me to quit using a torque wrench on drain plugs, and I owe him an apology
I used to torque every single drain plug to spec because that is what the book says, but Ray, who has been turning wrenches for 31 years at the shop off Peoria Ave, kept telling me I was asking for trouble and would strip a pan one day. I ignored him until I cracked the threads on a customer's 6.7 Cummins oil pan last Tuesday and had to eat the cost of a new pan plus 4 hours of labor. Now I snug them by feel and check for leaks after a heat cycle like he showed me. Any of you still torquing plugs, or did you learn this the hard way too?
