A 10 minute color grading pass with a friend in Seattle saved my whole portfolio

I was stuck on a set of 12 portrait pieces, everything looked flat and muddy. A friend who does film color timing sat with me for one quick session. She pointed out that I was relying on auto contrast and never touching the curves panel. We did a basic shadow and highlight split, added a tiny bit of teal in the shadows, and suddenly the skin tones popped. I had been fighting with presets for 3 weeks. Has anyone else had a huge leap from one short tutorial or critique instead of grinding alone?
