Thought digital art portraits were a gimmick until I tried one at a booth in Austin
Last month at a small art fair in Austin I walked past a guy doing digital portraits on a tablet. I figured it was just a filter with extra steps. My wife talked me into sitting for one, $40, ten minutes. The artist didn't trace anything. He pulled up a blank canvas and built the whole face from scratch with a stylus while I watched. The shading around my beard and the little scar on my eyebrow were dead on, and he never once looked at a photo. Now I'm curious how many of you actually show raw timelapse footage of your process when you post work online.
My cousin sat for one of those in Nashville last year and the guy actually filmed the whole thing on a phone propped up next to him, so you could watch it back at like 8x speed. Honestly the timelapse was more fun to watch than the drawing itself. I feel like most artists don't post the raw stuff cause it shows all the ugly middle parts nobody wants to see.
