Showerthought: my camera roll has 4,000 photos and I only looked at 12 of them
I finally sat down to clean out my phone storage, and I found 4,000 pictures dating back to 2019. Turns out I take 10 shots of the same coffee cup or parking spot and keep every single one. I deleted 2,300 of them in about 40 minutes while watching TV, and my phone feels way faster now. Why do we treat our camera roll like a junk drawer instead of actually going through it? Has anyone else found a good way to stay on top of this without spending a whole weekend on it?
I set a recurring alarm for Sunday nights called "phone dump" and it takes 10 minutes max. The trick is I only delete, never organize, because sorting into albums is what makes it feel like a whole weekend job. Open the camera roll, tap Select, drag my finger down the screen to grab everything from a month, then uncheck the few keepers and hit delete. Photos I actually want get auto-backed up to Google Photos before I ever start, so deleting off the phone costs me nothing. 4,000 down to about 600 that way and it stays there.
The "phone dump" alarm is hilarious but honestly genius, way better than my method of waiting until my phone screams at me that storage is full. I had 47 pictures of the same parking spot because I kept forgetting which level I parked on, and instead of deleting the wrong guesses I just kept taking new ones. My camera roll is basically a crime scene of my bad memory. The uncheck the keepers trick is the part I never thought of, I always try to pick what to delete and end up scrolling for an hour. Ten minutes on a Sunday beats my system of panic deleting at 2 percent battery in a parking garage.
