Bought a $220 travel router before a 6-week stint in Chiang Mai and I still think most nomads waste money on gear
Everyone in the nomad groups told me I needed a fancy router and a VPN subscription, so I dropped $220 on a GL.iNet setup before flying to Chiang Mai for 6 weeks, and honestly the cafe wifi and my phone hotspot did 95% of the work. The one time it saved me was a hotel in Pai with a captive portal that kept dropping, but that feels like a $15 problem, not a $220 one. What's the piece of gear you actually regret buying, not the one you'd recommend to everyone?

Waste of cash. A $20 repeater does the same job in 95% of hotels. Mine sat in my bag for a year before I sold it.
