Just saw a report that 72% of digital nomad visa holders don't file local taxes correctly
I was reading a study from a tax firm that works with remote workers, and they said most people on these visas mess up their tax filings. They looked at data from Portugal, Spain, and Croatia over the last year. The big issue is people think the visa itself sorts their taxes, but you often still owe money locally on your income. I almost made this mistake when I was in Lisbon last fall. Has anyone actually used a good accountant who gets this stuff and doesn't cost a fortune?

Honestly, that number seems way too high from what I've seen. Most nomads I meet are super careful about taxes because they're scared of getting in trouble. Tbh, the ones who mess up are usually just working for a US company and think the foreign earned income credit covers everything, but it's more complicated than that.

Max330 is right, I met a guy in Lisbon who got a huge bill from the IRS for that exact reason.

My buddy Dave got nailed by the IRS a few years back when he tried to claim the foreign earned income credit after teaching English in Thailand for like 8 months. He thought he was being smart about it, but he didn't realize you have to prove you're actually living there full-time and not just hopping around. He ended up having to pay back like $4,000 plus penalties because he messed up the paperwork. It was a whole thing, and he was all stressed about it for months. That Lisbon story doesn't surprise me one bit, people think they can wing it and then get slapped hard.
