Accidentally built an Xbox that sounds like a 747 at the Fort Worth retro shop

Stopped by that retro console store off 35 last Saturday to grab a dead original Xbox for parts. The guy behind the counter threw in a spare 80mm fan for free. Got it home, ziptied it to the GPU heatsink without checking the airflow direction. Turned it on and it sounded like a jet engine revving for takeoff. The fan was blowing straight down onto the board, pushing hot air everywhere. Swapped it around after 20 minutes of laughing and it runs quieter than my laundry dryer. Has anyone else made a dumb airflow mistake that took way too long to spot?
