Talking to a retro repair guy in Portland made me rethink my whole soldering setup
I brought my crusty PS5 HDMI port into this tiny shop and the guy told me he still uses a $25 iron from 1998 with a chisel tip, said my fancy $200 station was overkill for board work. He showed me how he wicks solder with braid and flux, no hot air gun at all. Anyone else drop big cash on tools only to find the old school way works better, or is it just me?
That flux makes all the difference. I fixed an old receiver with a $12 iron and just enough patience, no station needed. The secret is keeping the tip clean and letting the solder flow to the joint, not forcing it. Modern tools are nice but they don't fix shaky hands.
