Overheard a kid talking about 'vintage' desks from 2015 and it hit me weird

I was at a thrift store last Saturday and heard a teenager call a laminate desk from 2015 'vintage'... made me realize my own desk build from a salvaged hollow core door and 2x4s is pushing 12 years old now. Has anyone else gone back to look at their first DIY desk and just cringe a little?

My first desk was a 2007 Walmart special that bent in the middle. I built a replacement from 2x4s and an old door back in 2011, and it's still standing somehow. Kinda funny how the cheap junk made today is labeled vintage already.

Has anybody actually thought about what will happen when the "vintage" label catches up to the really well-made stuff from the '90s and early 2000s? Like @sean_walker45 said, his old door desk is still standing after 13 years... that's a statement on how solid real materials are compared to the particle board everyone calls vintage now. It's almost like we're speedrunning nostalgia so fast that the word vintage has lost all meaning, you know? Give it another 10 years and someone will be selling a 2020 IKEA Linnmon in a hipster store for $400. My own door desk has dings and stains from coffee spills, but that's character... not something you can fake with a distressed paint job from a factory. I think the real cringe is looking back and realizing how much better old junk was than the new stuff people pretend is retro.
