The $3 shelf bracket that outdid my $40 monitor arm mount
I was stuck with a wobbly monitor arm from a yard sale in Tucson, so I tried a wooden shelf bracket from the hardware store as a desk clamp instead. Took about 45 minutes to sand and bolt it to the back edge, using two C-clamps I already had for stability. That thing holds my 27 inch screen rock solid, no sag even when I bump the desk. Has anyone else rigged up a non-traditional mount that beat the proper gear?

My buddy did something like this with his TV after his wall mount ripped out of the drywall. Instead of paying a guy to fix it, he bolted a couple of fence post brackets to a stud and hung the whole thing off those. Sound familiar? He spent maybe 8 bucks and it has been up for three years now, and his kid has hit it with a nerf ball more times than I can count. The funny part is the $60 mount he bought first sagged within a month, but the fence junk never moved. Sometimes the cheap stuff just wins because it was built to hold way more weight than we give it credit for.
