Warning: tried sanding a plywood top with a palm sander before glue dried, big mistake in Dayton

I finished a workbench top last Tuesday and rushed to sand it about 4 hours after clamping. The glue hadn't fully cured, so it gummed up my 80 grit disc and left a weird shiny smear across two whole sheets of plywood. Took me an extra 3 hours with a belt sander and a scraper to fix the mess. Now I wait a full 24 hours before any sanding touches new glue. Has anyone else ruined a top this way or do you just use a hand plane first?
