That capacitor advice someone gave me on here was totally backwards
Some user named 'fixit_frank' told me to always replace a bulging cap with the exact same brand, so I spent 3 days tracking down a Nichicon for an old monitor. Turns out any decent low-ESR cap would have worked fine and I wasted $12 on shipping for nothing. Anyone else run into bad advice from this sub?

I ordered a Nichicon cap from Mouser back in 2018 for a dead power supply and paid $15 in shipping for a $3 part. Turns out a Chemi-Con from Digikey would have cost me half that and shipped free. That whole "exact brand" thing is nonsense unless you're dealing with audio gear or some weird switching supply that runs right at the edge of its ratings. Frank's advice just sounds like he memorized one rule from a forum post 10 years ago and never questioned it. Stick with any reputable brand that matches the voltage and ESR rating and you'll be fine 99% of the time.

Did the guy who gave you that advice also swear by using only OEM bolts on a toilet flange?
