Found out why one of our elevators kept faulting at the 4th floor after a 3 month mystery

Turned out to be a tiny crack in a relay that only acted up when the car slowed down at that exact floor. Shop foreman at the Seattle depot said he saw it once on an old Otis back in 2008. Has anyone else chased a ghost fault that turned out to be some weird intermittent hardware thing?

Takes a step back and disagrees with calling it a ghost fault. That relay crack was a solid physical defect, not some mysterious glitch. If you had bumped the car or hit that floor at a slightly different speed, it might have worked fine for weeks longer.

I get what you're saying @claire_butler1, but calling it a "solid physical defect" feels a little too certain to me. Who's to say that crack wasn't caused by some random vibration or voltage spike that just happened at the wrong time, making it a ghost fault that only showed up under those exact weird conditions?
