Got called to a high rise in Chicago where the governor rope was frayed down to the core

It was on a 20 story building, and the rope had been rubbing against a sharp edge on the sheave for months. The building guys said they heard a weird noise but thought it was normal. I mean, idk, maybe it's just me but that's a full system failure waiting to happen. Now I check the entire rope run, not just the car top, on every inspection. Anyone else had a close call from a simple thing everyone else missed?

Used to just check the car top, but that story changed my whole routine.

Changed your whole routine" sounds like overkill to me. People get way too scared by one bad story. Checking the car top is common sense, no need to go full paranoid mode. I've been parking on the street twenty years, never had an issue with anything on the roof. If someone's that worried, just lock stuff in the trunk. One story shouldn't make you change how you live your life. Odds are way lower than people think.
